Today the boys looked at a slightly more challenging image. At first they were a little stumped because it didn't seem like there was a lot "going on" in the picture, but they acknowledged that that challenge made them look closer, searching the whole picture plane for details including the outside edges, and thinking more about the artists choices. They noticed the artist's choice of a relatively dark color palette, cited details about the gentleman subject's probable age based on his somewhat wrinkled appearance, and even had ideas about how the picture was mounted in layers. The boys had some great ideas about the illegible writing at the bottom of the image. Someone suggested that it may be like some kind of postcard, while others thought it might be more didactic in nature; more like the artist's notes. Unfortunately, the reproduction on the smart board didn't produce a clear enough image that the boys could discern that the dog in the picture is actually a cardboard cutout. After allowing them to look at the image on the computer screen they were able to sight several details which suggested that the dog was a 2 dimensional object.
The boys continued work on creating their own composite characters and thinking about a humorous situation where they might be thinking one thing and saying another.
